It is the masterpiece of the brilliant engineer and road builder, Thomas Charles Bain (1830 - 1893), and the last of the seventeen passes he built in the Cape Province.
The Swartberg pass was built between 1881 and 1888 by Thomas Bain, son of the famous Andrew Geddes Bain. The dry-stone retaining walls are still in place and 120+ years old. This route is subject to weather conditions.
